    • Was there anything I didn't like about this book? No. There was not. :)Ivy Rose has created a beautiful piece of art in The Old River Road. It’s beautiful in almost every aspect it could be. I love this time period the story is set in, so that it made it even better for me, but I think even those who don’t prefer historical fiction can still find the charm in this book.I also thought it was incredibly awesome that it was based on true events.Such a clever way of retelling a history in form o [...]

    • 4.5 starsThis was one of those nice, cozy, sweet, charming reads. In a way, it made me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I would recommend it for those days when you just want a good read. Nothing too deep and thought-provoking but gentle and yeah, just sweet. A lot of events happened as William and Clara met, courted, married, and went through trials and difficulties, but daily life was kind of skimmed. Which set the tone for the relaxed read, not deep-in-thought. The main "disclaimer" I'd put is [...]

    • This book just <3.Full/updated review:Oh, where to begin? First off, I loved THE OLD RIVER ROAD, and secondly, it's one of my new favourite books.Though the first few chapters were good, the story got even better, and soon, I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Clara, William, and the members of their family. It was a wonderful sort of story: the kind with no particular plot, but in a lovely way -- a way that bases your desire to continue reading on the lives of the characters rather than [...]

    • My rating: 5 of 5 stars Ahhhh, I just love this book so much!!! :D Seeing as how I read an e-ARC I will certainly be buying a hard copy as soon as possible. :) I feel like I should start this review by commenting on the whimsical beauty of this book. Because it truly is a beautiful story. <3 I have seen in other reviews where it was mentioned that the book had a Laura Ingalls Wilder or Janette Oke feel, and I agree. Though The Old River Road isn't third-person (as are the Little House books) [...]

    • I really really enjoyed this book! I love historical fiction, especially set in the 1800s, so this was right up my alley! I finished it in about 2 days time, and cannot wait for book 2! What made this book even cooler in my mind, was that it was actually about the author's relatives. (great-grandmother, maybe?)My one and only critique is that the characters didn't have a lot of depth. I took me a little bit to really get into the story, and even so, they just weren't very well-rounded. But other [...]

    • This was a very sweet book. I must admit going into it I was expecting more of a normal novel outlined book, but it ended up being more of just the story of Clara's life. Don't get me wrong, I liked the layout, It just threw me off so I wasn't expecting it. I ended up really enjoying the free style and lack of super firm plot. Clara is just an ordinary girl, much like a lot of us. When the story begins she is seventeen and the youngest of a lot of girls, which I loved because I can really relate [...]

    • I've been wanting to read this book since I first heard it was being written. I wasn't disappointed. Well written, engaging, sweet, heartbreaking–it was all there. I had to wipe tears away so I could keep reading. (I don't usually cry when I read a book.) Knowing that this story is based on the events of real people made the story even better. You could tell the author has seen many of the places in this book for the descriptions weren't vague as so often happens. My only complaint was that bo [...]

    • I was honored to be able to critique this novel. For Ivy's first publication, she has woven a simultaneously heart-warming and heart-wrenching story. My love for the trials and triumphs of this story are only increased by the fact that it is a true story. The author does a tremendous job of conveying the era and the relationship between husband and wife, and her research is evident. I'm not sure I've ever laughed and cried so much while trying to pay enough attention to the mechanics of a book t [...]

    • Well, I highly enjoyed this book!As someone who lives in the area described in Washington in the latter part of the novel, I enjoyed reading about my homeland in the eyes of the McDonalds. The book was very believable and had such a realistic picture painted of what life on the frontier of Washington would be like. The characters were lovable and the story encouraging--- no matter how hard things got, the McDonalds always chose to praise the Lord through the trials and the blessings.I highly rec [...]

    • Age Appropriate For: All AgesBest for Ages: 12 - 20Those who are listed on Homeschooled Authors are my people. Anytime I am not sure what to read, I grab one of their books from my kindle or shelf. I picked this one from the list on my Kindle books, wanting something I knew wouldn’t be filled with things I might regret reading.Remember those old book series or movies that were popular before we were born but our parents had us watch?the ones that gave the story of most of a person’s life fro [...]

    • What a sweet, light story! Sometimes that's just the kind of read you need. I liked that this is based on the author's relatives, and applaud her for all the work she put into the research. The characters are pleasant and the closeness of the families involved in the book is wonderful. The story is slower, and the plotline fairly simple, so it's a great book for cuddling up with tea on a rainy day. My favorite part was when the Indians came, towards the end of the book. :) I liked Clara's charac [...]

    • This is a sweet, lovely, simple story that takes place back in the 1800s. I was privileged to be a beta reader for this wonderful story, and I absolutely loved it!The depth of the characters was amazing! I felt like I got to know each and every one personally. The fact that this was based on a true story made it all the more enchanting! These things really happened. These people lived. I loved that! Ivy has done a great job bringing their story to life. Also, I loved the faith that is woven thro [...]

    • I started this book this morning, and I finished it an hour or two ago. I was pleased, although it wasn't what I was expecting. To be honest, I didn't read the summary all that thoroughly or I totally forgot reading it from when I originally added it to my to-read list to when I bought it. Anyway, I was glad I read it, and I consider the couple hours I spent holed up in my bedroom well-spent.A very sweet story that, I've heard, is based strongly in nonfiction, The Old River Road is definitely w [...]

    • Perhaps it is bad to start out a book with high expectations. While sitting down to read this book, I had very high hopes. Just look at the lovely cover!! Needless to say, The Old River Road did not disappoint me!!Ivy Rose's writing style is very similar to my favorite author's--Janette Oke. I enjoyed how Ivy portrayed beautiful characters with their own distinct personality. Her romance was simple, yet perfect. I loved how she wrote the romance between Clare and William, making it clean for rea [...]

    • 3.5 starsI was drawn to this book before I read it as I love stories that delve into family history. This made the book even more real, and it was fun to figure out what might be fact and what might be fiction :)William and Clara unfortunate bump into each other on the street leads to a romance that will forever change their life. While, the book is focused on them getting together and starting a family, it isn't a heavy romance book. I found it natural and sweet. My favorite part of this book [...]

    • Wow! What a great book! Ivy Rose has a wonderful way of transforming the reader to the life of Clara and her family. I loved it so much! The writing style is amazing. Ivy did a great job of bring out the details and letting the reader see it all unfold. The story is so beautiful and the fact that it is a real life happening makes my heart sing with delight. I can hardly wait for the next book. The first half of the book was so lovely with Clara and William's romance unfolding and the second half w [...]

    • A sweet story, this book is full of family interactions and humor, along with the real struggles of 19th century life.cially when moving out to the frontier is involved. Suspense keeps the reader engaged with Clara as she struggles through new experiences, some painful, some laughable. And, in it all, it is Clara's faith which keeps her strong. This is a perfect story for anyone who loves historical fiction, coupled with Christian romance and a strong (but not preachy) faith. If you like historic [...]

    • This book was exceptionally sweet and one that I completely and thoroughly enjoyed reading. The characters were very endearing and I quickly became attached to them. And, to think that this book told the true story of this author's great-great-grandparents cool! I loved William and Clara and to know that they were real people added a very neat aspect to the story and made me enjoy it even more. What I Liked: This story had a very easy pace, yet the events, circumstances, trials, and adventures of [...]

    • Oh goodnesswhere to start? The Old River Road was one of the best historical fictions I've ever read. What makes it better is that it's a true story about real people!I loved this book. I both laughed, and cried. (And crying is something I do NOT do. Ever.)Ivy Rose is a truly amazing author. I'm excited for the second book to be finished and published.I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in historical fiction. Fantastic! One last thing; I want to rave a little about the cover. [...]

    • I am so glad that I was able to read this book, and not just because the cover is beautiful! =)As other reviewers have mentioned, I thought that Ivy Rose's writing style was indeed similar to Janette Oke's, and the overall story was similar to some of her books, as well as having some "Little House on the Prairie" flavor to it. :)Another enjoyable thing about this book was the sweet, clean romance and biblical portrayal of courtship between Clara and William. It's so rare to find a clean Christi [...]

    • Wow. This book was such a fun cozy read! It was sweet to see William and Clara's romance in the beginning and then even after they got married and had children. It reminded me a lot of Janette Oke's style of writing and the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. It was a heartwarming book and I loved reading it!! I was impressed by all the research that must have went in to it. =) I never felt like it was boring or un-interestingI always was ready to sit down in my cozy chair and pick it up. ;) The only th [...]

    • I don't read a lot of historicals these days, my taste tends more towards fantasy generally, But as soon as I read that this book was a true story I was interested. I adore true stories, and particularly enjoy, one from the pioneer period. The Old River Road (my mind keeps trying to type Rose, instead of Road) is a sweet story. Not the most engaging or exciting book, but a relaxing book for those day you just want something quiet. The story paints a clear picture of a life in Chicago and later out [...]

    • I just realized I posted this review on the other version of The Old River Road! I don't know why I just did. :)Here's a link to my review and I've updated the rating to 5 stars. (What? I reread it and liked it better the second time )~Kellyn Roth
